010 | Five Things to Teach Your Toddler About Jesus
& our favourite Christian picture books

I’m always so thankful to be at this end of motherhood—the beginning. Yes, it's all-consuming and requires so much from us, but it’s also filled with excitement, hope, and wonder. We don’t yet know what our children’s futures hold, but we can pray for them, guide them, and trust God’s plan for their lives with so much optimism.
One of the most beautiful things we can do as moms is to introduce our little ones to Jesus from the very beginning. It might feel overwhelming at times, but we don’t have to do it perfectly. Our job is to lay the foundation, trust God with the results, and simply invite Him into our daily lives with our kids.
If you’re wondering where to start, here are five simple truths I teach my toddlers about God. Plus, I’ll share some of our favorite books that make these concepts easy and fun to talk about!
1. God Is Always With You
This truth has given me so much comfort since I was a child. Whether I was afraid in the dark or uncertain about the future, knowing that God was with me brought me peace. I want my kids to hold on to that same truth.
One of my favorite books for this is Found by Sally Lloyd-Jones. It’s based on Psalm 23 and beautifully captures God’s care and presence in our lives. Sally Lloyd-Jones also wrote The Jesus Storybook Bible, which we absolutely love. Every story in it points back to Jesus, making it a wonderful way to introduce children to God’s great rescue plan.
2. You Are Blessed to Be a Blessing
One of my sons is named Asher, which means "blessed." The word "blessing" was on our hearts during the season he was born, and I’ve always wanted my kids to understand that being blessed isn’t just about receiving—it’s about giving, too.
Right after Asher was born, my mom gave us The Blessing of You. This sweet book reminds kids that they are a blessing and that their actions can positively impact others. I try to point this out to my kids in everyday moments—like when they’re kind to a grandparent or share with a sibling. It’s a simple way to reinforce that their lives are a gift to those around them.
3. You Are Fearfully and Wonderfully Made
Psalm 139 reminds us that we are all wonderfully made by God, and I want my kids to know that truth deep in their hearts. They are uniquely created by Him and so deeply loved.
One of my favorite books to teach this is Just in Case You Ever Wonder. It’s a beautiful story about how God made them and chose them to be part of our family. There’s a little bear in the book, and since we always call my daughter "Ria Bear," she especially loves it. Reading this book has even made me emotional, realizing how intentional God was in forming every little feature of my children.
4. God Will Always Love You
I want my kids to know that nothing can separate them from God’s love. No matter what happens, His love is constant, unchanging, and always with them.
One of our favorite books for this is Don’t Forget to Remember. It’s filled with beautiful, whimsical illustrations and a simple, powerful message about God’s never-ending love. My kids love pointing out all the fun animals in the pictures, and I love that it reinforces such an important truth.
5. You Can Talk to God Anytime
Teaching my kids about prayer has been so special. When my daughter was around 18 months old, we started showing her how to pray with a simple, “Jesus, thank you. Amen.” It was short and sweet, but it helped her understand that talking to God is something she could do anytime.
We found a wonderful book called Any Time, Any Place, Any Prayer, which perfectly explains this concept for little ones. It reminds kids that they can pray no matter where they are, what they’re feeling, or what they need to say. I love how it simplifies prayer and encourages kids to connect with God in a personal way.
Inviting God Into Everyday Moments
I try to be intentional about bringing God into our home in natural and fun ways. But I also remind myself not to stress about it. Our kids’ salvation is ultimately in God’s hands, not ours. Our role is to introduce them to Him and trust Him to do the rest.
